Students, educators, and supporters, we have the answers to your questions here.

Why was Distance Traveled created?
Distance Traveled workshops are geared toward those under-represented in medicine (URiM), and more specifically to those under-represented in orthopedic surgery. We know that early exposure to orthopedics for anyone is a crucial driver for students to explore a career in orthopedics. Our goal is to drive diversity, equity, and inclusion in orthopedic surgery by exposing orthopedic surgery to those who may not have early opportunities (such as vis a vis a parent/family member). We acknowledge the "Distance Traveled” to Orthopedics, including the obstacles along the way. We also recognize the importance of the journey, including the mentorships, networking, and connections made during the journey.
How can I attend a Distance Traveled event?
Distance Traveled is launching its hands-on workshops with New York City Schools. If you are a URM student in the New York area, talk to your science teacher or school administrator about Distance Traveled and encourage them to contact Distance Traveled about a workshop at your high school.
What grades are included in your event?
Distance Traveled is working with high schools in New York City.
What will I learn at an event?
First, you will earn about the different sub-specialties of orthopedics: Pediatrics, hand, foot & ankle, sports, shoulder & elbow, adult reconstruction, trauma, oncology/tumor, and spine. Then, after a brief lecture, you will have a hands-on experience with our orthopedic team.
After I attend a workshop, what support could I receive from Distance Traveled?
We hope our workshop sparks your interest in orthopedics and opens your eyes to new opportunities. After the workshop, Distance Traveled is a resource and support system for students to - step by step - think about a career in orthopedics. We are here to open doors and provide support along the way. As Distance Traveled evolves, so will the opportunities for our students who are a part of Distance Traveled. Sign up here to stay in the know and receive emails and updates from Distance Traveled.
What should I do to ensure I can stay on the path to a career in orthopedics?
Be inquisitive, learn everything, crush your tests, differentiate yourself, become a leader, and remain involved with Distance Traveled! Join our email list (link here) and learn about mentorship opportunities, resume classes, and other networking opportunities with Distance Traveled. We are here to support you on your journey!
What does the path to orthopedics look like for me as a high school student?
Four years of undergraduate college, four years of medical school, five years of orthopedic surgery residency, and a one-year fellowship. 14 years! But worth it!
What is the curriculum for the Distance Traveled workshop?
Dr. Christen Russo and orthopedic surgeons from New-York/Presbyterian and Columbia University lead the half-day program. The event curriculum is as follows:
  • Introduction to Orthopedics
  • Short presentation on the path to orthopedics
  • Hands-on Procedures
    – Suturing & Casting
    – Intramedullary Nailing
    – External Fixation
  • Q&A sessions with orthopods
  • Discussion of Alumni mentoring and opportunities to stay involved with Distance Traveled
